General discussion about nntp//rss.

Subscription listeners

Postby LuciferC on Mon Nov 22, 2004 9:47 pm

Hi there,

thanks for the cool application.

I was wondering about the "Subscription Listeners" in the config file. What is the purpose of these settings?

I am currently writing a Gentoo ebuild for the app and was wondering whether I should simply remove these settings or add an explaining sentence so that users understand what they can do with these settings.

Thanks

Gunnar,

Good question! Subscription listeners were added during the development of 0.5, but I haven't yet officially documented them.

Basically what they do is configure nntp//rss to listen for feed subscription requests on ports used by other newsreader applications.

For example, subscription links for Radio Userland take the following form:

Code: Select all
http://127.0.0.1:5335/system/pages/subscription?url=feedurl

... the following subscription listener element in the nntprss-config.xml would tell nntp//rss to start a listener on port 5335, and wait for subscription requests to the aforementioned URL. The param attribute defines which parameter within the query string contains the feed URL.

Code: Select all
<subscribe name='Radio Userland' port='5335' path='/system/pages/subscriptions' param='url' />

Thanks for writing the Gentoo eBuild. When it is available, please send me a link, and I'll add a pointer to it from the web site.

Thanks for the explanation. I'll add a note to the config file.

The ebuild is ready in it's first version and you can grab it from my website (http://www.gunnarwrobel.de) or directly download it here: http://www.gunnarwrobel.de/tiki-downloa ... ?fileId=18

The ebuild probably still needs to be polished until it becomes part of the Gentoo distribution. I opened a Gentoo bug and this can also be checked for further progress:
