Create a forum (or multiple) for RSS feed lists?

Postby Jontu Kontar on Tue Jul 01, 2003 9:12 pm

Just a thought, since this site is a bit more accessable than "Syndic8" is most times. (As a matter of fact I can't load Syndic8 right now.)

If you choose to do so, I would recommend main threads based on content. EG. TechNews, Videogames, Blogs, etc. These threads should be made sticky and probably should be locked so that only you can alter them. Other threads made in the forum should be incorporated into one of the main threads and then be deleted.

Suggested format Posts:

Subject:
[Descriptor] - Website
Message body:
Website
Main Page: URI to homepage
RSS Feed: RSS URI

Example User Post

Subject:
[Technews] - Slashdot
Message body:
Slashdot
Main Page: http://www.slashdot.org
RSS Feed: http://www.slashdot.org/slashdot.rdf

Example Main Thread

Subject:
[Technews] - Main
Message body:
Slashdot.org
Main Page: http://www.slashdot.org
RSS Feed: http://www.slashdot.org/slashdot.rdf

OSnews
Main Page: http://www.osnews.com
RSS Feed: http://www.osnews.com/files/recent.rdf

The reason I suggest a main/RSS pages is that some sites host their syndication on another site. Having both listed makes it easier to catagorize the entries. (I remember Gamingreport.com saying something like this but I can't find it now.)

Thanks for the suggestion!

At this time, I think the team over at Syndic8.com are doing a great job in cataloging RSS feeds, and providing the flexible tools to interrogate the directory. Unfortunately I think phpBB is quite limited in the tools it has to support this type of cataloging activity, although your metadata markup scheme certainly addresses some of those issues.

If you're having access issue to their site, it might be worth sending Jeff Barr, the architect and maintainer of the site, an email. You can find his email address at http://www.syndic8.com/press.php

Thanks,

Jason

There is a list of RDF and RSS feeds at

http://www.php-homepage.de/projects/RuDolF/

It is in German but should be simple enough to understand. It also provides an XML export at

http://www.php-homepage.de/projects/RuDolF/export.php?export=xml&IE=.xml
